It’s no surprise that becoming successful in the world of business opens the door to a life of luxury. Many of those who have crossed over into the Billionaire range have bought some expensive toys for themselves to drive around. Some, such as the Swedish billionaire and Ikea founder, Ingvard Kamprad, (worth an estimated $28 billion) still drives his 20-year-old Volvo 240. That’s worth under $2,000.
Others have taken full advantage and scooped up the best cars that money can buy. Here is a look at the five best cars that have been purchased by some of the world’s richest businessmen.
5. Audi R8
The GT and GT Spyder models of the Audi R8 can reach top speeds of nearly 200 miles per hour. It’s hard to imagine a place in America where it would be possible to get up to those speeds, but this car belongs to two different American business moguls.
Nike founder Phil Knight (worth $14.4 billion) and current New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg ($27 billion) are the proud owners of this sporty German car. So what is the price tag on this newest incarnation of the R8? It’s listed currently at $120,000.
4. Porsche 959
Have you ever heard of a car that is so rare, it doesn’t even have a crash test rating? Well, that’s exactly what the Porsche 959 is, since only 230 were made in the entire world. The 959 can go from a stopped position and cover a quarter mile in just less than 12 seconds, which would make road trips a lot faster if it weren’t for laws or traffic.
So who is the lucky recipient of the 959? That would be Microsoft founder Bill Gates ($72 billion in 2013) and his partner in crime, Paul Allen ($15 billion in 2013). The car itself costs nearly $250,000 dollars, but Gates’s version is believed to cost even more.
3. Bentley Continental Flying Spur
Weighing in at nearly three tons, the Flying Spur is a tank with a twin-turbo W12 6.0 litre engine and a top speed of 200 miles per hour. The 2013 version that was made available to the public carries a price tag of over $200,000.
However, the one that is driven by the world’s richest man (Carlos Slim Helu, $73 billion) carries a tag of over $300,000. Even though he is the world’s wealthiest person, he still drives his car to work everyday without the aid of a chauffeur. Then again, if you drove a Bentley, wouldn’t you want to drive it at every chance?
2. Rolls-Royce Phantom
The Phantom is already considered to be a high-end luxury vehicle that is out of the price range of well over 99 percent of the world at a price tag of $250,000. However, the version that is driven by Saudi royal family member Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Alsaud ($20 billion) is even more expensive. Even more than the model driven by Michael Fux, The Man Who Became a Paint for Rolls Royce. (Prince Alwaleed is claimed to have over 300 cars in his collection, of which, the most famous is the $48 million, diamonds’ encrusted, Mercedes Benz. Source).
Rolls Royce will accommodate any request made by the customer as long as they are willing to pay for it, and they certainly did with Alsaud. His version of the Phantom is valued at $447,000 according to BornRich.com. He is joined in possessing this driving elegance by J.LO, Marc Anthony, Sylvester Stallone, and more. The Phantom will be a collector’s item in 2016, though, as Rolls Royce announced plans to replace this model.
1. McLaren F1
The F1 is the fastest car to ever be on the road with a top speed of nearly 240 miles per hour. Since only 106 cars were produced in a short amount of time, from 1992 to 1998, they’ve become very hard and very expensive to find and acquire.
That was no problem for Larry Ellison, (net worth $43B in 2012) however. The founder of Oracle loves his cars (and jets, islands, yachts, etc), and the F1 he currently has in his possession set him off by $970,000 (equal to $4Mil today) when he bought it. That’s a lot of money for a lot of speed.
Not to forget, Larry used to own a Bentley Continental Flying Spur sedan as well, albeit an older model! Oh, do you remember comedian Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean)? You must, as he also drives a McLaren F1.
Worth mentioning also:
Mukesh Ambani, $22.3B, Maybach 62 worth $1.1 Mil
Anil Ambani, $5.2 B, Lamborghini Gallardo V10 worth around $300,000
Roger Federer, $77M, Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Roadster worth $200,000
Leonardo DiCaprio, $200M, Fisker Karma worth $100,000
Dubai Police Force, 2013 Bentley Continental GT
