Dubai Motor Show 2015 Highlights

The Dubai Motor Show is a biennial auto show held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Due to the high interest of expensive cars in Dubai, this auto show attracts major car and super car manufactures, tuning companies, Antique Auto and Classic Car Restorers, Automotive restoration providers, a slew of motorcycle manufacturers, and other related companies.

This year, I went to see for myself whether the Dubai Motor Show meets its hype or not. I parked the car, walked the long walk, paid the AED65 (~$18) entry fee and and went into the Dubai International Convention Center halls. It wasn’t the weekend thankfully, so the crowd was just right. Funny enough, while strolling through the halls, I ran through a small crowd and lots of mobile phones taking photos. It was the entourage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (The Ruler of Dubai) who was visiting the Dubai Motor Show, with his son Shk. Hamdan, crown prince of Dubai. The later is one big royal fan of automotive jewels.

This was the 13th edition of the Dubai International Motor Show, taking place amidst much fanfare. A five day affair, this edition of the show attracted a lot of media attention due to the imminent unveiling of the latest from few of the mammoths in the automobile industry. Among those who participated in this extravaganza, the names worth a mention are Bentley, Rolls Royce, BMW and Ferrari.

The show took off on the 10th of November 2015 while the curtains fell on the 14th. Those who visited this show have been signing praises of some of the beauties put on display by the exhibitors. Let’s take a look at the highs and lows of this spectacle.

Highlights of the Dubai Motor Show 2015:

Motoring nostalgia museum

This deserves first-place among the many highlights of the show. The Motoring Nostalgia Museum was a concept that specifically catered to vintage car collectors from UAE and elsewhere. Many of the antique and classic car restorers, along with some expert and international automotive restoration providers were competing to show how they can bring back a vintage car to life.

It had on display some of the most celebrated cars of by-gone eras (mainly 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s). There were some truly magnificent cars on display in perfectly working condition. Some of the displayed cars were registered and capable of roam the streets, should the owner be able to pay the required costs to keep such beauts on the road.

Boulevard of Dreams

Showcasing the best of the best, the latest in super cars and super bikes, this event was also a major crowd-puller and media magnet of the Dubai Motor Show 2015. Among the many breathtaking jewels on display, the original street-legal 1997 Esperante GTR-1 was unveiled for the first time at the show after an extensive restoration by Panoz craftsmen. This beauty cost around $900K.

There was a separate tiny section which was aptly named ‘Biker’s Arena’ to display only luxury super bikes for bike lovers.

Live talks with experts

This was event had the highest attendance in terms of media and businessmen alike. The event was graced with some of the biggest names in the automobile industry which included marketing tycoon and Promoseven Holdings Chairman & Founder, Akram Miknas (and also a classic car collector), owner of Alvis car company Alan Stote and Vijay Pillai from Max Garage. Also present was TV presenter James Nicholls with his inimitable charm and charisma!

Spare parts et al

Also displayed are automotive parts, AC systems, electro-mechanical parts, Petroleum products, pneumatic systems, power tools, safety wear, transmission systems, wheel alignment etc. What made this a great opportunity for traders and car owners was the fact that all the latest technology was displayed under the same roof.

Glitz and Glamour:

The royal presence of the crown Prince of Dubai, his highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammad bin Rashid al Maktoum, boosted the morale of the automobile industry greatly. Shk Hamdan was seen having a serious talk with the top suit working for Nissan UAE. Shk Hamadan complained that the current Nissan Patrol is as slow as a turtle, while the previous models were as fast as a rabbit. Coming from the crown prince, Nissan is for sure in deep shit.

007 Bond, James Bond, set of cars starring in Spectre movie

On display, without the slightest possibility to get closer to enough or to touch, were three of the cars used in shooting 007 latest spy movie; Spectre. They were: Aston Martin DB10, Land Rover Defender, and its sibling Range Rover Sport SVR. Boring if you ask me but acted as a crowd magnet nevertheless.

The cars attracted many selfie-fans and it was next to impossible getting a clear shot of the cars, as you see below!
